Following a recent incident in which a rescue line parted while a young person was being pulled through the water, we have been advised that similarly defective lines may be currently in use on vessels.
Fortunately, no injuries were sustained during the recent incident – but had the incident occurred at sea, the consequences could have been severe.
Upon investigation, it was found that the rescue line was made up of short sections of line fused together, which had compromised its strength. See the MAIB Safety Bulletin SB2-2018 for more details.
If you carry similar lines on your vessels, please ensure they are checked as soon as practicable.
